Case Summary #1: Pharmaceutical firm

SSI has served one of the nation’s largest pharmaceutical conglomerates since 2003, with full storeroom management responsibilities at 4 of its most significant plants.

Initial assessment

Initial site assessment observed organized storerooms, but with bloated inventory. Maintenance staff spent a significant amount of payroll time simply searching for parts.

Core outcomes

Between 2003 and 2009 SSI reduced the MRO inventory by 60%, while increasing quality, reducing down time as well as nearly eliminating tens of thousands of “rec to check” invoices, PO’s and checks.

KPI results

A recent performance report to the client also indicates a significant reduction in staffing costs, with an increase in productivity and parts availability. SSI created comprehensive systems and management reporting with over 100 Key Performance Indicators available on demand.

Accuracy increase

In addition, there has been a dramatic improvement concerning inventory accuracy over SSI’s term of service. Client has indicated that all SSI transactions and operations are audit-compliant.


Case Summary #2: Food Processing plant

SSI provides complete integrated tool crib management and materials procurement services for a major food and beverage processing plant located in the northeast corridor.

Baseline status

At the beginning of our engagement the MRO spend at the plant was $1 million, with $1 million of inventory on hand.

At the outset, the site was chaotic and disorganized, with piles of non-catalogued materials in boxes and misplaced items on shelves.

Fully managed MRO storeroom

SSI applied fully integrated services, including SSI’s Storeroom on Site® technology to manage the storeroom, process parts requisitions and invoices, and deliver over 100 standardized reports. This drove efficiency and accountability.

Core outcomes

In the first 12 months of operations, SSI saved the client nearly 8% in net cash savings solely on procurement of parts. Just two months into the second year of operations, net cash savings were tracking at more than 20% from the beginning of SSI operations.

Service level exemplary

At the end of the first year of operations, SSI’s service level was at 99.80%, which means a nearly perfect performance record.


Case Summary #3: Transportation plant

SSI has served a major transportation manufacturing facility in the Midwest since 2004. SSI provides pure integrated storeroom solutions for the client, including procurement, full tracking of inventory, and on-site management of the tool crib.

Obsolete inventory

SSI identified a significant amount of obsolete, unusable inventory at the plant and reduced the inventory by 35%, while increasing quality factors across the board. This eliminated wasted time looking for parts, which had earlier caused productivity loss among maintenance staff.

Core outcomes

During the first 5 years of operations, SSI reduced total indirect materials inventory by a net drop of 53%. SSI created a completely auditable parts operation at the plant, with service level and inventory accuracy over the 5 year period of 99%.
